Satellite Television Networks - A Buyers Handbook
Satellite TV Networks purchase some programs from TV networks, independent companies, and radio stations, then make this programming available to the public. There are currently two satellite TV Networks in the U.S. - DirecTV and DISH Network. Here’s an overview of who they are and what they offer.
DirecTV
DirecTV was founded in 1994 and is the largest network. as that time they have grown to more than 16 million customers, and have launched 15 satellites to offer service to those customers. They have consistently maintained a top consumer rating with J.D. Power & Associates.
DirecTV has more than 255 channels of programming, 80 of which are broadcast in HD (high definition) format. In addition to their TV channels, they also have 73 XM radio channels, and offer 60 pay-per-view movies a month.
When you order one of their program packages, DirecTV would give you a complete satellite system - dish, receivers, and remotes - for free. Their program packages start at less than $30a month and local channels are included.
DISH Network
DISH Network was begun in 1996, and is the fastest growing network. They currently have 10 satellites servicing more than 14 million customers. Like DirecTV, they have consistently maintained a top rating with J.D. Power & Associates.
DISH Network has more than 355 channels, 75 of which are HD. They also have 52 music channels, 60 Sirius radio channels, and offer 75 pay-per-view movies a month.
They would give you a complete 4-room satellite system when you order one of their program packages, with prices that start at less than $20 a month. Local channels are $5 a month.
